Alexandre Lazarian (University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, USA), "Acceleration of particles in the process of mirror diffusion"

Turbulent magnetic fields are stochastic. Magnetic field strength perturbations induce magnetic mirrors that reflect particles back. Combined together, this induces a new process of mirror diffusion, which for typical interstellar conditions corresponds to a much smaller mean free path compared to turbulent scattering. The small mean free path corresponds to the high efficiency of coupling of particles and turbulence. As a result, the second order Fermi acceleration by magnetic mirrors gets very efficient. This is another new process: mirror acceleration. I shall discuss the physics of both processes and invite the audience to consider the astrophysical implications.
