Stuart Ryder (Macquarie University, Australia), "Fantastic Radio Beasts (FRBs), and Where to Find Them"
Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are energetic pulses of mostly radio emission lasting only a few milliseconds that rarely repeat, which has made pinning down their origin extremely difficult. The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) has pioneered the discovery and localisation of non-repeating FRBs, enabling us to ascertain not only which galaxies FRBs occur in, but where within these galaxies they occur. I will describe our findings from following up these host galaxies with the ESO Very Large Telescope, and highlight the potential of FRBs as unrivalled probes of the ionised intergalactic medium and for cosmology.
