Carmela Lardo (University of Bologna), "The enigma of multiple populations in cluster stars"

The discovery that globular clusters host multiple populations of stars with unique chemical compositions has renewed the community's interest in these extremely complex stellar systems. Several theoretical scenarios have been proposed to explain the emergence of light-element variations in massive star clusters, yet no model has proven capable of reproducing the observational evidence in its entirety. More than 40 years after the discovery of multiple populations, their origin still remains a mystery and it is unlikely that the various questions about the formation and evolution of globular clusters will be answered without new insight. In this talk, I will provide an overview of observations of multiple populations with particular emphasis on recent evidence that has the potential to pave the way for advances in this field of research.
