Optimal inference from radio images of the epoch of reionization

The project aims to The project aims to study the “Cosmic Dawn” period and the following epoch of reionization, when the first galaxies formed and ionized the surrounding intergalactic medium with their emission. Observations of these epochs can be carried out via the 21 cm spectral line and are one of the key science cases of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a next generation radio interferometer currently under construction in Australia and South Africa. This project studies the 21 cm observability from the epoch of reionization with the SKA using data taken with precursor telescopes and simulated observations study.

Planned activities:
Analysis of observations taken with the SKA and its precursors in order to characterize calibration and systematic errors in future, deep, SKA observations of the Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization. The characterization of such errors will allow us to assess their impact on the measurement of the 21 cm model parameters.
