Martian Analysis of Resources and Structures: Lava tubes, neAr-surface ice and aquifers Visibility and Assessment (MARS-LAVA)
The MARS-LAVA project (Martian Analysis of Resources and Structures: Lava tubes, neAr-surface ice and aquifers Visibility and Assessment) is a basic research proposal funded under the PRORIS program (promoted by MUR, CNR, and INAF).
Led by CNR-IREA (with Principal Investigator Pietro Tizzani) in collaboration with CNR-IFAC and INAF – Institute of Radioastronomy of Bologna, the project aims to characterize and assess the structures and resources of the Martian subsurface. Main objectives:
• lava tubes and subsurface cavities: Analysis and detection of volcanic tunnels as potential natural shelters for future human exploration;
• water and ice: Identification and mapping of near-surface ice and potential aquifers or groundwater;
• advanced techniques: Modeling and analysis of radar data to assess the visibility and composition of these structures.
Planned activities:
• detection of lava tubes for future human bases;
• mapping of surface ice and aquifers;
• simulation of radar visibility of cavities and stratigraphy.
