DustPedia meets Metal-THINGS: Dust-METAL
Understanding the interplay among the components of the interstellar medium (ISM: dust, gas, metals) in galaxies in the Local Universe is crucial for galaxy formation and evolution. In recent years, the project DustPedia has enabled widespread characterization of dust in nearby galaxies. The most powerful mm/cm radio telescopes have allowed us to add information on the molecular and atomic gas, and key results in this field have been obtained within INAF. We ask for funds to enrich the analysis performed so far with Metal-THINGS IFU optical spectroscopy data tracing gas-phase metallicity across the entire extension of DustPedia galaxies. This allows us to draw a comprehensive picture of the ISM in the Local Universe and to promote a new line of research: the Dust-METAL collaboration.
Planned activities:
The planned activities include: deriving metallicity maps and radial profiles for spiral, face-on DustPedia galaxies; using empirical and theoretical methods to check for systematic differences; characterizing key ratios (dust/gas, dust/metals, dust/stars) at sub-galactic scales and comparing them with chemical evolutionary models to constrain the star formation history across galaxies.
