The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) by night, under the Magellanic Clouds

ALMA Regional Centre

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is one of the largest international telescopes in existence. Its imaging and spectroscopy capabilities, combined with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution at frequencies of 30 GHz–1 THz, enable us to study molecular gas and dust in the Universe. The Italian node of the European ALMA Centre (ARC) provides technical and scientific support to the astronomical community and is involved in the telescope’s development. It organizes seminars, tutorials, and workshops to inform and train the Italian community and to stimulate scientific discussions and collaborations. ARC staff are involved in teaching and supervising students and in (sub-)millimeter science projects covering a variety of topics (from galactic and local Universe studies to high-redshift galaxies and cosmology).

Planned activities:
The Italian node is one of the seven nodes of the European ARC network and it is hosted by the IRA in Bologna:
• offers support in preparing and submitting proposals, monitoring accepted ALMA projects, and data reduction with the CASA package;
• assists in the development and use of the ALMA archive;
• supports the activities of the mm-VLBI network with ALMA;
• organizes seminars, tutorials, and workshops to inform and train the community;
• provides computational resources for ALMA data analysis.
