Daniel Karner (University Observatory Munich), "Spectrally resolved cosmic rays in cosmological simulations"

Over the past two decades subgrid models for cosmic rays have been implemented into several cosmological simulation codes. This growing interest is related to the desire for a quantitative understanding of both the role of cosmic-ray protons with respect to baryonic feedback in star-forming galaxies and the non-thermal radio emission from relativistic electrons in galaxies, groups and clusters serving as tracer for particle acceleration and transport in various environments. In this talk I will present updates to the on-the-fly spectral cosmic-ray solver CRESCENDO in the cosmological simulation code OpenGadget3. I will highlight how we can use both constrained and idealized simulations in combination with observational data to learn more about the cosmic-ray population within galaxy clusters. Some of the numerical challenges and corresponding solutions will also be mentioned in detail.
