Stefania Varano (INAF-IRA), "Talking about resolution"
We present an educational lab that makes use of the pegs and pegboards (very familiar toys for children) to experiment and look into the concept of digital image resolution. The image to be reproduced with the pegs is placed under the pegboard, which is used as a colour sampler: the image is reconstructed by inserting in each hole a peg of the corresponding colour. When the nails are too big, fine-sampling is not possible, therefore we get low resolution representations. Choosing which parts of the image to detail, students also experience the potential of higher resolution observations in astronomy, and the opportunity to choose between high resolution and good coverage of the sampling.
